Skin is the most delicate layer of dogs. As a dog’s skin is composed of only one layer, it’s very sensitive and dogs can catch skin diseases very fast. Dogs can just scratch and scratch and you may think it’s their daily habit but you may be wrong sometimes. They may be suffering from a simple skin disease that may transform into a critical one. There are various signs and symptoms of skin diseases that are enumerated:

  • Skin sores/lesions
  • Excessive scratching
  • Dry or flaky or scaly skin
  • Rashes
  • Redness in the affected area
  • Hairfall in the affected area only
  • Lumps
  • Excessive Dandruff
  • Bumps
  • Bald patches
  • Excessive licking

 

DOG SKIN DISEASES IN NEPAL

As said earlier, dogs may get into contact with skin diseases very easily as they have a very delicate and single layer of skin. Even short contact with bacteria can make them suffer from severe skin diseases. We will discuss some of the common dog skin diseases in Nepal here.

 

  • Allergies due to the surroundings

Environment allergies occur in dogs when they come in contact with grass, dust mites, or pollen. They may suffer from excessive itching in the areas like face, feet, chest, and stomach. They get irritated with the stomach. The irritation may go away easily if you apply shampoos, tablets, and injections on them after the contact.

 

  • Allergies due to food

Yes, your dogs can have food allergies if it’s not digestible. Raw eggs, beef, or chicken for example. It’s not assured that every dog can have these allergies. But some dogs may be sensitive to certain food items. Hence, the elimination diet is the best example of it. Immediately seek a vet if you are seeing any skin disease in dogs after the consumption of food items.

 

  • Folliculitis

The inflamed hair follicles are present in the dog’s skin. These diseases occur when a dog suffers from mange and other skin allergies. If the dogs get affected by this disease, the dogs may have sores, bumps, and scabs over the skin. The usage of shampoos, oral antibiotics, and antibacterial ointments can help these skin diseases recover soon.

 

  • Impetigo

Pups are more prone to this skin disease. The lesions appear on the dog’s bellies in the form of blisters that can burst and they may spread over the body and the germs may stick to other parts of the body too. The use of antibiotics is best for this skin disease. 

 

  • Ringworms

It’s not actually the worm but the fungus that appears on dogs’ skin as crusty and circular patches. The infections are found on the dog’s head, paws, ears, and front legs. The fungus is very contagious to animals and even humans too. The dogs’ skin gets excessively red due to itching and continuous scratching.

 

Types of dog skin diseases in Nepal

 

  • Yeast Infections

These infections occur in the warm areas of dogs’ bodies such as the ear canal, dog toes, groin, perineum, etc. The affected part of the skin gets thickened which causes the dogs to itch and bite at the infected areas. They continuously scratch the affected areas. The continuous scratching results in discolored skin and a foul smell from the infected area. The usage of topical cream and tablets is best for the remedy. 

 

  • Ticks and fleas

The skin infections are caused due to the saliva of ticks and fleas and they enter the body of the dogs causing the allergic response to dogs. These irritable creatures cause frequent itching leading to red and inflamed skin in dogs. The bite marks of these tiny suckers are also seen on the skin.   • Mange

This skin disease is a severe skin condition caused by the mites that live on the dog’s hair and skin. These mites are responsible for the itching and scratchings. This skin disease also results in hair loss on the dog’s face and legs. The demodatic and Sarcoptes mites reside on the dog’s skin and cause the dog to scratch severely in the affected area.

Besides these common dog skin diseases, dogs also suffer from Dandruff, Seborrhoea, etc Among the various skin diseases, dogs also have to go through various skin diseases like Neoplastic skin diseases, metabolic skin diseases, Immune-mediated skin diseases, Neutrophilic skin disorders, and Eosinophilic skins disorders.
